Kabuki Theater
Kabuki Theatre or Kabuki-Za is located in Ginza in Tokyo. The term Kabuki means song, dance and technique. It is one of the most famous Kabuki Theatres of Japan.
Kabuki is basically a traditional Japanese theatre, which began in the year 1603, during the Edo period. This theater form is characterized by heavy make up and stylized drama. The plays deals with topics like historical events and relationships. In the olden days both men and women used to perform in these plays. However, after the Tokugawa Shogunate was established, women were restricted from performing in these plays. Hence, male actors used to play the role of women.
The Kabuki-za heater in Ginza is the perfect place to watch these plays. The theatre was opened to the public in the year 1889. The building is a wonderful example of Japanese architecture belonging to the Meiji era. The unique architectural style of this building is something worth checking out.
The theatre was however destroyed in a big fire in the year 1921. During the Kanto earthquake of 1923, the reconstruction of the theatre building was incomplete. The new building was reconstructed according to the baroque Japanese revivalist style. The theatre building looks like a Japanese castle belonging to the 16th century. Sadly, however, during the Second World War the building was once again destroyed. It was however rebuilt again in the year 1924. Today, the Kabuki-za Theatre is one of the most ancient and traditional Japanese buildings and thus a major tourist attraction of the city.
Plays are held in the Kabuki Theatre almost everyday. The stages are huge and are referred to as the Hanamichi, which means a flower path. The stages are technologically advanced and one can also find revolving stages, trap doors, and small wagon stages in this theatre. The lighting and sound system in the theatre is good and the seating arrangements are comfortable.
